Now, I am the least political person I know (much to the dismay of my husband who loves a good heated political debate) but this boils my blood.  Governor Blagojevich, in his budget cuts is streamlining an already too lean Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS)…I haven’t even explored that yet though because of the two state park closures that are extremely close to me and affect all of us in the Chicago Southland and beyond.  While Governor Blagojevich was enjoying the DNC in Denver his office put out notice that over 24 State sites, including 11 State Parks and 13 Areas of Historical Interest are to experience closure as of November 1, 2008.

The beautiful Gebhard Woods in Morris, Illinois (just west of the most adorable historic downtown area in our region) is one of the state parks local to us.  It’s beautiful and well worth a visit (it’s located just west of Morris’ beautiful downtown district). In my own backyard the significant to our community Channahon State Parkway (also known as I&M State Canal Park Trailhead) is also slotted for closure.

In response the community of Channahon is organizing a rally this

Monday, September 1 at 9 a.m. at the Channahon State Park

map of chan state park

Please join us in voicing your opinion on the loss of our community treasure.

Other sites scheduled for closure are:

STATE HISTORIC SITES
— Dana-Thomas House, Springfield
— Lincoln log cabin near Charleston:  yes, Illinoians, you read that right.
— David Davis mansion, Bloomington
— Fort de Chartres, Randolph County
— Vandalia statehouse: our original statehouse before Lincoln lobbied to have the state capitol moved to Springfield

— State center at Bishop Hill, Henry County
— Carl Sandburg birthplace, Galesburg
— Cahokia courthouse
— Bryant Cottage, Bement
— Jubilee College, near Peoria
— Apple River Fort, Elizabeth
— Fort Kaskaskia, Randolph County
— Pierre Menard home, Randolph County

STATE PARKS
— Castle Rock State Park, Oregon
— Lowden State Park, Oregon
— Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, Sheffield (it’s a gorgeous parkway in a beautiful out of the way part of Illinois, there’s an amazing bed & breakfast that way if you are so inclined)
— Illini State Park, Marseilles
— Channahon Parkway State Park, Channahon***
— Gebhard Woods State Park, Morris***
— Hidden Springs State Forrest, Strasburg
— Kickapoo State Park, Oakwood
— Moraine View State Park, Leroy
— Weldon Springs State Park, Clinton
— Wolf Creek State Park, Windsor

Southern Illinois’ The News-Gazette made a beautifully valid point in this quote:

Although the world will be watching Illinois in February 2009, when Lincoln’s adopted state celebrates the Kentucky-born 16th president’s 200th birthday, several sites associated with Lincoln will close, including the Lincoln Log Cabin, his parents’ last home, near Charleston, and the Vandalia statehouse, where Lincoln served in the state Legislature before Springfield became the state capital.

"It’s going to be devastating to local communities that depend on these sites for tourist revenue," preservation agency spokesman David Blanchette said.

State Rep. Bill Black, R-Danville, called the move "ridiculous."

"I think it’s a shame and disgrace to do this as we go into the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birthday," he said.

Though he said the governor "has a very legitimate concern in that the budget was not balanced," he "slashes with a dull ax."

"When we go back to veto session in November, we’ll try to find places where we can restore money," Black said.

What sort of legacy is Blagojevich leaving?  Not much different than George Ryan, IMO.

I cannot believe how chilly it is today.   Totally unlike yesterday’s session weather!   Andria (the mom) brought cute jeans & sweaters for the girls (& hats, let us not forget hats!!).  These poor, beautiful girls were so awesome to put up with us in the 86º heat + humidity while I did their portraits.  A big thank you to Robert & Andria for bringing A & P out last evening from Naperville for a Marmalade Session : Urban Style.  The girls are so beautiful and such a pleasure to work with.  I think you’ll be very happy with how it all turned out!

Scroll now for sneak peeks!!

  • Danna Bowes - September 5, 2008 - 2:38 pm

    love love LOVE these!!!!

Soundtrack: I’ve had it in my head for days now.  I’ve never loved The Stones (unlike my friend Lisa who loved them from moment one!) but I’ve really grown to appreciate them in the past few years.  It’s a rule of life that is sometimes hard to swallow.  "You can’t always get what you want…"

I realize I’m a few days behind in sneak peeking.  My apologies as I don’t normally like to neglect my blog.  🙂

Late last week I had the pleasure of meeting these three pretty dynamic personalities.  Their mom had me come out to their home to photograph them, it was a pleasure getting to know them through my camera lens and I think that the mom will be very pleased at what we got in our short time together.  I love that these kids opened right up to me.  I love that their mom set out to get images of her 7 & 10 year old beautiful little girls and to capture her son’s beyond fun personality, thank you so much C for allowing me into your lives for what has turned out to be a great session:

pretty girl

Totally a bit of faux attitude.  She was so supersweet.  I love this age!

another pretty girl

Look at that beautiful smile!

fun guy!

Doesn’t he have the most awesome hair?  It so rocked my world that day!!

Thank you for stopping in, have a great Sunday.

Namaste.

Beautiful captures of these three children. I am sure their parents will be thrilled with these.

Soundtrack: The Kooks.  Seriously could the lead be any more adorable?

Totally sound a bit like Squeeze, don’t you think?

I can hardly believe that school has started!!  Tuesday was the girls first day back (and incidentally enough on day 3, today, I was already late getting them to school…LOL.  Long story.  I feel like an idiot and DH got a talking to about waking people up at 11:30 p.m. who have been sleeping for awhile.  Going back to bed at 4:30 a.m. is not conducive to waking up at 6:30 to get children ready for school.  I so need to go back to my lazy college days where I didn’t have to be anywhere until noon!).

Before going back to school we went to the fair:

yes it

I’m not sure how I feel about this monkey on a leash thing but that’s neither here nor there…and yes, he’s drinking out of a mug.  I wonder if it was a shot glass filled with gin.

Some experimental stuff:

ferris wheel

Looks a bit platinotype I think…

the original one (well after i got to it, wish the teenager silhouetted heads weren’t there but oh well):

originaly ferris wheel

and then the finale of it all…back to school.  SOME of us were excited:

b2school

b2school2

i fear it’s going to be a long year ahead of us!!

🙂  Tomorrow, sneak peek and more Marmaramblings.

Namaste.

Your experimental photo is FAB girl. LOVE it! (And the original is not too shabby either, lol!)

Soundrack…my husband bought me this 2 disc album the other day by Adele….this is one of my favorites from the album (there are many)…her voice is so beautiful.

So, getting down to business.  It is sneak peek time…

G is a little girl who I’ve watched grow over the past three years.  I adore her sweet smile, her beautiful personality and am getting a sense of who she is becoming.  The hardest part (and also the funnest part) is watching littler ones grow up in front of me from year to year.  I find it bittersweet to see this coming of age (for lack of a better term) growth in my subjects.

Regardless of my own feelings of the ridiculously fast nature of the passage of time I found G to be extremely giggly and fun to be around.  What a treasure she is!!  A big thank you to Victoria and G for coming out for a mixed session.  We did some indoor stuff in studio and ran out to the Garden for the rest of our time together.  Dare I say G had a blast exploring at the garden?  Yes, I do dare say so…
