{"id":722,"date":"2008-08-30T15:17:31","date_gmt":"2008-08-30T21:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marmaladephotography.com\/blog\/?p=722"},"modified":"2008-08-30T15:56:41","modified_gmt":"2008-08-30T21:56:41","slug":"now-for-something-very-serious-the-state-of-illinois-state-parks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marmaladephotography.com\/blog\/now-for-something-very-serious-the-state-of-illinois-state-parks\/","title":{"rendered":"Now For Something Very Serious : The State of Illinois State Parks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now, I am the least political person I know (much to the dismay of my husband who loves a good heated political debate) but this boils my blood.&nbsp; Governor Blagojevich, in his budget cuts is streamlining an already too lean Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS)&#8230;I haven&#8217;t even explored that yet though because of the two state park closures that are extremely close to me and affect all of us in the Chicago Southland and beyond.&nbsp; While Governor Blagojevich was enjoying the DNC in Denver his office put out notice that over 24 State sites, including 11 State Parks and 13 Areas of Historical Interest are to experience closure as of November 1, 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The beautiful <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.state.il.us\/lands\/landmgt\/parks\/i&amp;m\/EAST\/gebhard\/Park.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gebhard Woods<\/a> in Morris, Illinois (just west of the most adorable historic downtown area in our region) is one of the state parks local to us.&nbsp; It&#8217;s beautiful and well worth a visit (it&#8217;s located just west of Morris&#8217; beautiful downtown district). In my own backyard the significant to our community <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.state.il.us\/lands\/landmgt\/Parks\/I&amp;M\/east\/channaho\/park.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Channahon State Parkway<\/a> (also known as I&amp;M State Canal Park Trailhead) is also slotted for closure.<\/p>\n<p>In response the community of Channahon is organizing a rally this<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\"><span style=\"background-color: rgb(255, 153, 204);\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Monday, September 1 at 9 a.m. at the Channahon State Park<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/?utm_campaign=en&amp;utm_medium=ha&amp;utm_source=en-ha-na-us-gns-trs&amp;utm_term=HPLink\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"368\" height=\"748\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marmaladephotography.com\/blog-new\/wp-content\/uploads\/chanstatepark.jpg\" alt=\"map of chan state park\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Please join us in voicing your opinion on the loss of our community treasure.<\/p>\n<p>Other sites scheduled for closure are:<\/p>\n<p>\nSTATE HISTORIC SITES<br \/>\n&mdash; Dana-Thomas House, Springfield<span style=\"color: rgb(0, 255, 0);\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(204, 153, 255);\">&mdash; Lincoln log cabin near Charleston:&nbsp; yes, Illinoians, you read that right.<\/span><br \/>\n&mdash; David Davis mansion, Bloomington<br \/>\n&mdash; Fort de Chartres, Randolph County<span style=\"color: rgb(204, 153, 255);\"><br \/>\n&mdash; Vandalia statehouse: our original statehouse before Lincoln lobbied to have the state capitol moved to Springfield<\/span><br \/>\n&mdash; State center at Bishop Hill, Henry County<br \/>\n&mdash; Carl Sandburg birthplace, Galesburg<br \/>\n&mdash; Cahokia courthouse<br \/>\n&mdash; Bryant Cottage, Bement<br \/>\n&mdash; Jubilee College, near Peoria<br \/>\n&mdash; Apple River Fort, Elizabeth<br \/>\n&mdash; Fort Kaskaskia, Randolph County<br \/>\n&mdash; Pierre Menard home, Randolph County<\/p>\n<p>STATE PARKS<br \/>\n&mdash; Castle Rock State Park, Oregon<br \/>\n&mdash; Lowden State Park, Oregon<br \/>\n&mdash; Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, Sheffield <em>(it&#8217;s a gorgeous parkway in a beautiful out of the way part of Illinois, there&#8217;s an amazing bed &amp; breakfast that way if you are so inclined)<\/em><br \/>\n&mdash; Illini State Park, Marseilles<br \/>\n&mdash; Channahon Parkway State Park, Channahon***<br \/>\n&mdash; Gebhard Woods State Park, Morris***<br \/>\n&mdash; Hidden Springs State Forrest, Strasburg<br \/>\n&mdash; Kickapoo State Park, Oakwood<br \/>\n&mdash; Moraine View State Park, Leroy<br \/>\n&mdash; Weldon Springs State Park, Clinton<br \/>\n&mdash; Wolf Creek State Park, Windsor<\/p>\n<p>Southern Illinois&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-gazette.com\/news\/politics\/2008\/08\/29\/governor_closing_24_state_sites_including_kickapoo_state_park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The News-Gazette<\/a> made a beautifully valid point in this quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Although the world will be watching Illinois in February 2009, when Lincoln&#8217;s adopted state celebrates the Kentucky-born 16th president&#8217;s 200th birthday, several sites associated with Lincoln will close, including the Lincoln Log Cabin, his parents&#8217; last home, near Charleston, and the Vandalia statehouse, where Lincoln served in the state Legislature before Springfield became the state capital.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It&#8217;s going to be devastating to local communities that depend on these sites for tourist revenue,&quot; preservation agency spokesman David Blanchette said.<\/p>\n<p>State Rep.
