Full disclosure before we begin: I’m Marianne Drenthe, founder of Marmalade Photography, and yes – I’m including my own business in this guide. So weird, right? Not really and let me tell you why\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a professional photographer who has been photographing Chicago families since 2005, there have been times when I have had to turn away clients, whether because my calendar was entirely full or because a potential client’s expectations did not fully align with the Marmalade business model. It’s been a long-time to do to write a guide to discuss other options when Marmalade cannot coordinate or isn’t the best option for a client’s needs. Because I genuinely want those families who do not align with Marmalade to find the right photographer for them: even if their budget doesn’t currently allow for luxury family photography or any number of other factors that do not allow us to align. I deeply hold the belief that every family deserves artwork worthy of being on display, and children deeply benefit from seeing printed portraits of themselves featured proudly on the walls of their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navigating the Chicago Family Photography Market<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chicago is home to an extraordinary community of visual artists, many of whom display immense talent and skill. But choosing a photographer isn’t just about finding someone whose portfolio makes you catch your breath. It’s about understanding the experience behind the camera, what you can expect after your session, and the final destination of your memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In over twenty years of doing this work, I’ve watched parents book the wrong photographer\u2026not<\/em><\/strong> simply because they made a bad choice, but because nobody explained the differences between the industry models and there is a lot of confusion in the marketplace as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wrote this guide as a small attempt to fix some<\/em> of the potential confusion and to bring to life<\/em> a concept I\u2019ve carried for many years: creating a transparent, local photography guide as a genuine service to the families we serve as a whole. My hope is that this guide benefits you as you shop and compare, helping you discover exactly what kind of experience and final product matters most to your family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First: Understand That “Family Photography” Isn’t One Thing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you Google search “Chicago family photographer” you’ll find everything from a college student with a new camera charging $150 for a USB drive of JPEGs to multi-generational studios charging $3,000 for a single framed canvas. Both call themselves family photographers. Both are technically correct that they photograph families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Superficially you may think the only differentiator is price. But that is just scratching the surface. The difference is studio\/photographer philosophy, in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes workflow, and finally what you’re actually buying from the photographer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
