ha, it really should read "took a break"

First hit <play> to accompany the reading that follows if you want to sit a spell.  Aaaah….Aqualung.

So I finally, just today, had the energy and time to undertake downloading some of my compactflash cards from my camera to my computer. I ended up editing a handful of images from our family trip up to the lake house near Hayward, Wisconsin.

My husband has been going up to this area for almost as far back as he can remember. He has a great deal of memories of going up north, fishing with his dad and family and really wants the girls to have a part of that magic. We had a blast relaxing and just doing pretty much whatever, whenever. What a great week away from home.

If you’ve never been to that part of the country I urge you to check it out especially if you’re a bit of the nature-y outdoorsy type. There are very few unspoiled spaces and this area is filled with them (well if you can ignore the million dollar lake homes surrounding the hundreds of lakes in the area).

Here’s just a bit of our trip. I used a zoom lens and was loving the wider end of the zoom range almost the entire trip.

You Know You

I swear the kid didn’t know what this was at first…you know you’re old when things like this common thing become obsolete to your kids. 🙂

When she was 2...

Madeline’s first beach was this beach on Madeline Island. I have this amazing pic of her at age 15 months walking along this shore with my husband…a fave of mine.

BTW, the kids did NOT believe us when we told them Lake Superior is ICE COLD. BRRR…

No idea...

I have no idea where she gets it from 🙂

Mare, your family is just gorgeous, your images are just as fabulous. They definitely make me want to go visit. I think it is wonderful that your husband is so keen to share his childhood memories with his children, it really is life coming full circle. Love the photo of you and your daughter, hopefully she will grow up to be just as amazing as you.

  • Brandy - July 8, 2008 - 12:17 pm

There is nothing like a family vacation at the lake. Nothing. Your children will remember the sights, sounds, smells of this forever!

  • Kimberly Hill - July 10, 2008 - 8:42 pm

I’m reading along, enjoying the story and the images, and then I got to the last one and literally GASPED. Where are you going to hang it?!?

  • Lisa - July 12, 2008 - 5:08 pm

  • Stacy - July 13, 2008 - 11:12 am

as usual, absolutely freakin fantastic! I hate that I live here (in WI that is) and rarely remember to see the beauty around me. Thanks for the reminder 🙂

Get Out! We go to Hayward every year!! Actually Minong – a half hour away from there. Love the little town and the candy store… the kids favorite place. So nice to hear someone else know where Hayward is!

As promised, I have a few BLD highlights here on the blog…since this was a special event I took a different course in displaying the images and am including them here on the site.

FIrst though, a big thank you to the City of Chicago’s Office of Mayoral Special Events that invited the BLD gang to come out and share the rhythm with Taste.   We had a rainy late afternoon/evening but the attendees STILL had a blast (as witnessed by the dancing that went on in the midst of major downpour).

A big thank you to Tiffanie Spearling, once again, and everyone who made BLD Taste possible…I hope you ENJOY a Taste of Taste. 😉

I had planned on getting some vacation pix posted up but I haven’t gotten around to downloading my images off my cards even (it’s been an excruciatingly busy week in Marmaland especially for someone who is supposed to be "on vacation" this week…) , so I hope there will be some stuff to share next time!!

In Marmaland, DH has gotten around to finally putting up my fantabulous shelving in my laundry room.  I feel all Martha Stewartish (sorta) again and am trying to fight the urge to reorganize everything.  I’m a do it all or nothing kind of gal and it’s been a long time coming getting this house organized.  There always seems to be *something*.  LOL  So maybe if I get motivated I’ll snap some pix and show off my uberorganized laundry room.  Is it sick to have a laundry room make one happy?  😀

I had the pleasure of photographing Lisa’s baby girl the day I left for vacation.  A little backstory on this session–Lisa brought accessories galore.  I am telling you we had jewelery, shoes (OH MY GOSH THE SHOES!), vintage accessories, hats…man this mom was *prepared*.

A big thanks to them for travelling out from within Chicago out to my studio.   I hope it was everything you were hoping for and MORE.  I truly enjoyed meeting you guys and think you will be truly delighted with the images we captured during our session…

So on with the sneak peeks!

What a cute that little girl is in the petticoat! Images to cherish for sure.

Really quick because is on the Taste of Chicago adventure today and I have to hightail it over to Grant Park to do some images for the always fun, never boring Baby Loves Disco set…

Before I leaving for vacation I had quite the busy end of week.  In the midst of it I had the pleasure of photographing this family of FIVE kids.  Five!  It was a blast getting to know them and their gorgeous mom (I still can’t believe she’s the mom of FIVE!) and I felt lucky to be part of their lives for the evening.   I travelled up to their home on the north side to hang out for a couple of hours with them.

  • PamN - June 30, 2008 - 4:52 am

You have such a gift for transforming images of everyday moments into ART! These are wonderful.

  • Danna Bowes - June 30, 2008 - 10:52 pm

these are fabulous, really really fabulous. I LOVE the connection between mom and daughter, that will be a bautiful keepsake for years to come.

Before I left for the NorthWoods I had crisis after crisis occur with my site (still not totally fixed 🙂 ) and a ton of sessions and a ton of to do’s.  So I apologize if I am a little behind and take full responsibility for being a bit haphazard the week prior to vacation.  I cannot believe how everything rained down on me.   Ugh.  Better to make lemonade out of lemons tho…

So before I get to any real discussions of vacation let me premiere my last sessions leading up to pre-vacation.  First up: Baby R.   You may remember her mom, I had the pleasure of photographing during her beautiful mama for her maternity images.  Baby Girl is just two weeks old in these images.  Welcome to the world oh beautiful one, I think you’ll find this place amazing, beautiful and filled with great things.  It was a pleasure meeting you and hanging out with you.

Vacation was pure delight.  I adored everything about it.  It took me DAYS to unwind and I think I slept most of my time there.  I got to read a book (in less than 24 hours, I devoured it, it’s My Best Friend’s Girl, really a good beach read).  I haven’t really developed any images but I do have one courtesy of the ole iPhone highlighting the dock & our boat (that we don’t use enough, IMO)!  😀   Ahhh the beauty in kicking back and letting the world pass you by.

These are just wonderful. I LOVE the doggie shot, how funny the ‘first babies’ get when their world is turned upside down 🙂 And your photo from your vacation is perfect. I want to sit on a beach and read, too!

  • nina pomeroy - June 29, 2008 - 8:55 am

The one with that cute little dog made me laugh out loud. You know he’s saying – there goes my thunder!

  • Pammy - July 9, 2008 - 11:49 am

Oh…I have been away too long. Lovely as usual. Of course the dog photo is my favorite. But, they are all good. Website looks awesome!

  • Jen Lane - July 30, 2008 - 6:39 pm

OK Mare. You have been BUSY.
Your blog is just full of gorgeous, wonderful moments caught by you, turned into art pieces by you.
I’d see a series and think, “ok, let me leave a comment”, but then I’d peek down just a bit further and get distracted with the next beautiful series! Your vacation looks just amazing. And all of these beautiful families that you’ve spent time with, photographing and laughing, must be so tickled with their images!
    Beautiful work!
