It’s no secret that some of my favorite photographs during Chicago family photography sessions include mother and child portraits.  I’ve photographed multitudes of families over the years and it’s one of my fondest wishes for photography sessions to include mothers with their children.  In fact I am so passionate about moms being involved in photo sessions that at a photographer’s retreat in Colorado a few summers ago I took it upon myself to persuade the mom of one of our models for that weekend to take part in posing for a serene water pool photo with her daughter.  My belief is that ANY opportunity presented where a photo can be taken with you and your children you should take it.   At one point the only things that are left are photographs (and videos, more on that later) and it’s so very important to leave those memories for your children.

I have also committed to my mom clients and I tell each and every one of them: I promise to create beautiful compelling photos that include you: be it as the focal point OR as a prop for the baby (some moms feel more comfortable being secondary in focus).  I assure you, my reader, that I will create gorgeous portraits that capture both your bond with your children AND the beautiful person that YOU are (both as a woman and as a mom).

Today I came across this beautiful article that features the viewpoint of a daughter whose mother passed away when she was all too young.  It simply reinforces my belief that a photo including mom is never a photo wasted.  It’s important to put aside our own body issues, our issues with aging, our issues with the size of our waistline and remember when we contribute our beautiful faces to an image taken with our children it is ultimately for THEM that we do it.  No one else.

Link to the article is below.  But first some gorgeous mother – child photos taken over the past year or so:

Since the inception of Marmalade Photography in 2005 we have always taken the during our suburban and Chicago family photography sessions to create mother-child images as we know that mom is usually BEHIND the camera.  We take care to photograph moms from the best angles and to make sure mom looks her very best.  If you’re ready for a Chicago family photography session (or somewhere in the burbs!) give us a call at 815-603-8450 to schedule your very own family photos with Marmalade Photography.

I encourage you to take the 5 minutes to read this heart felt article: DON’T DISAPPEAR FROM THE PICTURES

Are you looking to create some beautiful and personality filled graduation photos in Chicagoland?  You’re in for a treat!!  A bit of a preview for my oldest’s 8th grade graduation photos.

My oldest (pictured as a baby below) is graduating junior high May of 2014!  I cannot believe how time has flown by so quickly, I am so glad that we have a great mix of photos from when she was a baby (when I was an amateur with a camera), a large variety of professional photos (taken through the years way before I became a professional photographer) and then once I started Marmalade Photography: a great mix of my own snapshots and professional quality portraits as well as great images as taken by some fellow professional photographers like my talented photographer friends Lauri Baker and Pam Biasotti .

But this post isn’t about the past (except to showcase a then and now transformation).  It’s about the first part of my girls’ 8th grade photo session.  She wanted to do some images in the snow and we captured these on (hopefully) one of the last snow days!  We were attacked by the trees tossing down snow as the temperature increased but it was well worth it to capture the many moods of my gorgeous teenager!!

Thanks for stopping in to view these.  First I will include a quick snapshot from when she was about 8 months old.  Look at that gorgeous face!! (excuse the snapshot quality!)

From late 2000: SUCH A CUTIE PIE!!  They grow up too too quick.

Here are her beautiful 8th grade portraits in the snow, as always her gallery is filled with a fun mix of personality shots as well as what you expect from a typical portrait session:

    Such a beautiful daughter!

When I was a little girl, my dad would sit and fashion these exquisite little trees out of brass wire and gems (often broken costume jewelry of my moms). He would then mount these exquisite beauties to wedges of wood he had spray painted gold to match. These gem trees are the trees of my youth, I cherish the two I have as if they were made of real diamonds and gold.

On the night of my birthday I felt compelled to go for a short walk. I stopped when I saw the streetlight hitting the dew laden tree at the corner where my girls get on the bus for school. I was feeling sad, missing both my parents who are now gone, having spent my birthday with my beautiful family but still missing the people who brought me into this world. The moment I came across this great mostly natural spectacle I was inspired to run into the house and grab my camera. It reminded me of my dad’s gem trees.

I wish I could capture images exactly how I view them in my minds’ eye. I think that’s what keeps me on my toes, the always-searching-for-that-perfect-capture.

I miss you mom and dad. Thank you for the wonders you have gifted me since your passing, especially this gift of a gem tree.

This preview is from a session in South Barrington photography session at a favorite repeat client’s new home.  I loved seeing little A and her parents again.  It was just last fall that I saw her last and boy has she grown!

Thank you Barkha, once again, for trusting Marmalade Photography with these memories of your gorgeous little.
